Scotland should feel proud today…

May 26, 2014

It may be a dark day for Europe, but in Scotland the sun is shining

By guest writer Tabitha Mudaliar

Scotland should feel proud today, not ashamed. Here’s why –

In Scotland, 10.46% of the voting electorate voted for UKIP.

In Wales 27.55% of the voting electorate voted for UKIP.

In England 27.50% of the voting electorate voted for UKIP.

But percentages don’t always tell us the full facts, so let’s talk numbers shall we?

In Scotland, the votes cast in favour of UKIP were: 140,564. Scotland’s population is 5,254,000 (2.67% of the population).

In Wales, the votes cast in favour of UKIP were: 201,983. Wales’ population is 3,006,000 (6.72% of the population).

In England, the votes cast in favour of UKIP were: 4,351,204. England’s population is 53,000,000 (8.21% of the population)

Yes, you read it right, in England, almost the equivalent of the entire population of Scotland voted in favour of UKIP.

Why should we be proud?

• We should be proud because right here in Scotland, we live in a country where the majority of people do not vote for right-wing fascists.

• We live in a country where we have a chance to choose our own government in September, without a war.

• We live in a country with an equal and inclusive society.

• We live in a country that respects and loves its fellow man and the environment.

In my opinion, that makes Scotland, my beloved home, one of the most wonderful countries on the planet.

You don’t mean …of the electorate, you surely mean of the electorate that bothered to vote?

    • Yes Frank, thanks for that clarification, they are percentages of the vote, not of the whole electorate. We may edit it a little to make that clearer.
